Look at a child’s face as you read an illustrated book to him. He is utterly lost in the pictures, his mouth is open, his eyes are wide, it’s as if his mind has left his body. It’s as complete an immersion into a work of art as a human being can ever hope for. It is pure seeing.

We all share the magic of picture books, that captivating sense of wonder and satisfaction in a story well told with art and words. Perhaps this explains why Janeen Mason’s solo exhibit of 100 original illustrations is so successful.
Before the exhibition openings she visits area schools and during her lively presentations invites the children, teachers, staff, and their families to join her at the museum for the gala.
The night of the opening reception the exhibit space swells with enthusiasm and joy. Children - the guests of honor - haul their parents and grandparents around by the hand introducing Mason’s books and art. Inevitably they are the first to open the display copies featured throughout on kid-level pedestals. The children act as arts ambassadors while they point out which originals on the walls above them are found inside the pages. Parents say they couldn’t finish dinner that night, their children were so excited to get to the opening!
These guests represent a large demographic that can be difficult for museums and cultural institutions to engage. Each one of the institutions listed above reports Mason's picture book art exhibition enjoyed excellent attendance and terrific book sales throughout the opening and the run of the show.
